Before the bushfires, drought was wiping out our precious wildlife, koalas were stick thin, abandoning their young, unable to feed them. Eucalypt leaves brittle and dry. Bats were dropping out of trees from heat stress.
Climate change impacts are now extremely serious. In 2009, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature declared the koala as one of ten global species facing extreme impacts from climate change.
State and federal governments continue to refuse to acknowledge these impacts with legal provisions or refuges. Industrial logging, massive urbanisation projects, fossil fuel approvals and infrastructure are all wiping out koala habitat.
Without habitat, koalas cannot survive. Legal challenges have so far been unsuccessful but public pressure can force change.
