WE HAVE INSTRUCTED LAWYERS TO FILE A LEGAL CHALLENGE AGAINST DEECA ( THE DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HELICOPTER KILLING OF OVER 1000 KOALAS. ) THE LEGAL CHALLENGE WAS FILED IN LATE JUNE AT THE VICTORIAN SUPREME COURT.
LAWYERS ACTING FOR AUSTRALIANS FOR ANIMALS INC., SERVED AN ORIGINATING MOTION FOR A JUDICIAL REVIEW OF DEECA'S AUTHORISATION ALLEGING THE AUTHORISATION WAS UNLAWFUL.
A bushfire broke out in Budj Bim national park, Victoria and was extinguished in early March. Two months after the fires, the Victorian government's Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) held secret stakeholder meetings insisting that koalas in the burned areas were starving and needed to be euthanized.
Once the media was tipped off about burnt koalas in Budg Bim National Park DEECA was forced to acknowledge the slaughter. It is impossible to shoot koalas from helicopters with any degree of accuracy. Marksmen used binoculars to focus on the animals, shooting from 30 meters away. Terrifying koalas, leaving them potentially wounded with joeys orphaned.
The park is surrounded by blue gum plantations which had been recently harvested leaving surviving koalas to exist on tiny islands of eucalypts or fleeing into the park where they were subsequently shot. DEECA maintains there are 2,200 koalas in the park and that they were " all health checked" which is nonsense.
There was no ground truthing after the shooting which went on for around 3 weeks, DEECA claimed the burnt area was inaccessible but DEECAs own photos show the area was accessible . The government prohibits any carers or independent vets entering the site. Existing nearby feed trees were banded so koalas surviving the fires and blue gum harvesting couldn't access them for food and shelter.
The RSPCA Victoria signed an agreement with government which stops them from acting against any cruelty to wildlife.
When the news of the cull came out, International outrage erupted. In Australia, mainstream media censored the story, politicians said nothing. Major conservation groups said nothing. Their silence is outrageous.
Australians for Animals Inc has a long history of koala conservation. The charity is dedicated to ensuring helicopter shooting of koalas is banned forever. Only legal action can do the job. We have a great legal team including and a good legal strategy.
Please help. The Victorian government has refused to give an undertaking that helicopter shooting of koalas won't happen again.
